Description
Cincinnati was our half way point on our way to our summer vacation. We
spent one night going, and one night on our way back. We did several of
things in a short amount of time, sampling some of the features of this
city on the river.
Highlights
(i.e. best things to do, memorable moments, etc.)
Cincinnati is filled with many wonderful things to do. Several museums
are available to quench visitor's cultural thirst, but we focused our
short visit on animals. Our visits to the world famous Cincinnati Zoo
and Newport Aquarium were highlights of our trip. Both places were great,
but I highly recommend spending a day at the zoo if you have to choose.
Make sure to bring a camera to the zoo because you will see many animals
you may have never even heard of before and have some great photo ops
since the exhibits are wide open and filled with trees and plants to enhance
the realism.
Life
in Cincinnati focuses on the Ohio River. Head downtown or cross the river
into Newport for some evening fun. The Newport Levee has many shops, restaurants,
a movie theater and is also home to the Newport Aquarium. While there
are tons of great restaurants in the area, make sure you check out a classic
chili pallor. The one we tried, Pleasant Ridge Chili, was so good we actually
ate their twice!
For some thrills head over to Paramount's Kings Island to ride some of
the wildest roller coasters in the world.
Quick tips/suggestions
Do: Pay attention if driving around.
Highway 275 goes in a circle around the city and changes direction from
east to north to west to south and can be confusing.
Don't: Forget to head down to the river
in the evening to witness some beautiful city scenes.
Do: Go to a chili pallor and try out
the Cincinnati style of chili.
Do: Note that Cincinnati's Tri-State
area consists of locations in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Many things
to do are actually in different states.
Suggested local dish to try: Chili and
French Fries with Cheese and Gravy.
Best Way to get around
Getting There: Being on the river, Cincinnati
is accessible by car, plane or boat. We chose car and it was about a five
hour drive from Chicago. If you fly into town, there is a shuttle service
from the airport to downtown for $14 one way and $24 round trip. If you
take a cab it will run you about $25.00
Getting Around: Since we already had
our car we drove everywhere. Also, we chose places to visit that were
not central to the city such as the Cincinnati Zoo and King's Island.
If you chose to do things in the city itself, there are several buses
available. Note that you can not hail a cab in Cincinnati (I think it's
illegal) so they won't stop if you try. However, you can get a cab at
any hotel in the city.
